Chapter 8
Elizabeth paced the length of the spacious powder room, wondering where her sister was. The women's room was just as elegant as the fancy restaurant. Pink marble sinks lined the wall, with a long beige leather couch opposite them. A full-length antique mirror stood in the corner, and Elizabeth cringed every time she caught sight of her dolled-up reflection in it.
Elizabeth heard the door open and wheeled around. It was Jessica, her face pink with excitement. "Jessica Wakefield, you're ten minutes late!" she exclaimed. "What in the world am I supposed to say I was doing in here?"
Jessica winced. "Liz, I'm sorry. Quentin started talking about my modeling career, and I couldn't get away," she explained. "Just say you were freshening up. Remember, you are me after all."
Elizabeth sighed, glancing at her skimpy dress in the standing mirror. "How can I forget?"
Jessica set her handbag on the counter and pulled out a cosmetic bag. Then she opened it and turned it upside down, dumping an array of jars and tubes on the counter. Closing one eye, she carefully applied plum eye shadow to an eyelid. "I almost perished of boredom out there. Quentin hasn't stopped talking about himself for a minute. We haven't even had time to order."
Elizabeth smiled to herself, anticipating Jessica's reaction when she saw her dish of frogs legs and calamari. "Don't worry, I'll order for you," she said.
"Thanks, Liz," Jessica said, outlining her lips with a pink lip pencil.
Elizabeth sunk down in the couch. "What in the world is Chez Bench, by the way?" she asked.
Jessica's brow furrowed. "Huh?" she asked, forming an O with her lips and painting them with crimson lipstick.
"A restaurant you went to with Cameron?" Elizabeth prompted.
"Oh," Jessica said, throwing her lipstick back into her cosmetic bag. "That's just a joke. Cameron and I ate on the bench outside the Mode building one day, and he called it Chez Bench."
Elizabeth laughed. "That's actually pretty funny," she said. "Jessica, Cameron's a terrific guy I think you should just bag Quentin and stay with him."
"I wish I could," Jessica said, pulling out a few wispy strands to frame her face. "But Quentin said he wants to discuss my future after dinner."
Elizabeth tapped a foot on the ground, looking at her watch nervously "Jess, don't you think we should get back to our dates? The guys might send an emergency squad in here."
Jessica waved a dismissive hand. "Oh, Lizzie, you don't know the first thing about dating etiquette. Guys are supposed to be kept waiting. In fact, that's what they do best. They wait."
Elizabeth shook her head. "Well, I don't," she said firmly, hopping up. "I'm going upstairs."
Jessica grabbed her arm. "OK, but just prep me on your conversation with Cameron first. Is there anything I should know about it?"
Elizabeth fell back down on the couch. "Not really," she said. "We mostly talked about French philosophersâyou know, Sartre, Camus, and Descartes."
Jessica's mouth dropped open. "You didn't!"
Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Of course not, you goof," she said.
